Bio
Short version:
Sacha Halona Baumann is an artist, designer, curator, publisher, and art business professional based in downtown Los Angeles. Throughout her career she has worked closely with galleries, studios, and artists, helping them solve problems and achieve goals. Well-versed in contemporary art and its markets, Sacha excels in the operations of art and leveraging social and professional networking to create opportunities. She is the Estate Manager for The Peter Alexander Estate.
Sacha is the independent publisher of FULL BLEDE, a contemporary art and writing broadsheet. In Los Angeles she has curated exhibitions at Noysky Projects, Charlie James Gallery, and Keystone Artspace.
Sacha received her BA in Visual Communication from San Francisco State University and Masters in Art Business from the Sotheby’s Institute of Art (now the Center for Business and Management of the Arts) at Claremont Graduate University.
As an artist Sacha’s primary medium is collage—she extracts found images and places them in a new context, manipulating the original tone and intention, creating a new narrative. She does so using self-imposed restrictions, which is in part a nod to her training and work as a designer as well as a consultant, in which she concentrates on problem solving for the specific needs of clients. Restrictions become opportunities for new creations. In 2023 she began to incorporate painting into her practice, focusing on language, semantics, and diaristic narratives.
STEP and REPEAT, featuring her ongoing photography series focusing on downtown Los Angeles, was published in 2022 and 2023. The two unique volumes feature 450+ images presented in a full-color, 480 page soft cover trade paperback. The third volume will be published in fall 2024.
Bit longer version:
Sacha Baumann is an art business professional living and working in downtown Los Angeles. Well-versed in contemporary art and its markets, Sacha excels in the operations of art, working with artists, studios, and galleries. She is an expert at leveraging social and professional networking to maximize opportunities, and teaching others to do the same.
Beginning in 2022 Sacha became the Estate Manager for The Estate of Peter Alexander.
As an art business consultant she has worked closely with Los Angeles-based artists, helping them solve problems and reach goals. This includes: creating and maintaining archives; designing beautiful websites; creating marketing strategies and materials; grant, r.f.p.s, and pitch writing; exhibition planning; and acting as a sounding board for project ideation. Recent artist clients include Galia Linn, Debra Scacco, Molly Segal, Mary Little, Gary Brewer, Camilla Taylor, Joseph Masotta, Chelsea Dean, and Kelly Brumfield-Woods.
Sacha is the independent publisher, designer, and editor of FULL BLEDE, a broadsheet featuring writing and contemporary art. The newspaper launched in conjunction with an exhibition opening and is distributed throughout Los Angeles. Issue Ten launched in October 2019 and featured over 50 contributors.
As a curator, Sacha is committed to facilitating the recognition of emerging artists in Los Angeles. She has organized exhibitions at Noysky Projects, Charlie James Gallery, and Keystone Artspace.
Sacha holds a Masters of Art, Art Business from Sotheby's Institute of Art / Drucker School of Management (now the Center for Business and Management of the Arts), at Claremont Graduate University. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Visual Communication from the Design and Industry Department at San Francisco State University.
Born in Hollywood, California, Sacha’s childhood years were spent in both Northern and Southern California, Alaska, and Utah. An enthusiastic walking urban explorer, Sacha is a dedicated DTLA booster.
As an artist, Sacha extracts found images, primarily from magazines and books, and places them in a new context, manipulating the original tone and intention, creating a new narrative. She does so using self-imposed restrictions, which is in part a nod to her training and work as a designer as well as consultant, in which she concentrates on problem solving for the specific needs of clients. Restrictions become opportunities for new creations. In 2023 she began to incorporate painting into her practice, focusing on language, semantics, and diaristic narratives.
STEP and REPEAT, an ongoing photography book series, was published in 2022 and 2023. Each volume features 450+ unique images in a full-color, 480 page trade paperback, representing a small selection of her street photography taken around downtown Los Angeles between 2014 to present day. The third volume will be published in fall of 2024.
Artist's statement (<200 words):
I am an artist, designer, curator, publisher, and art business professional based in downtown Los Angeles. My primary art forms are collage and street photography. When I turn the pages of a magazine or book my impulse is often to extract graphic and photographic elements and place them in a new context—manipulating tone and intention to create a new narrative. I give myself restrictions as to how to appropriate found images into something new. This process is in part a nod to my design training—I identify and solve problems within specific parameters. The results are collaged works focusing on women, sexuality, typography, and texture. The original materials do not entirely disappear in the new compositions, but when successful their meanings and emotional tone shift into a complete, fresh image, sometimes whimsical, sometimes serious. Downtown Los Angeles is my muse—for nearly 30 years I have been walking around DTLA, examining and photographing the ever-changing landscape. Recently I began an ongoing book project featuring my photographs called STEP and REPEAT. The 450+ images for each volume are randomly selected from my iCloud and published in a full color, 480 page trade paperback book.
